Fresh Pigeon Pea is a Raw Toor dal Pea. We Get this Pea during winters, like we get Fresh Green Peas & Field Beans. This Fresh Pigeon Pea can also be added to salads & soup.
This pea has Enormous Health Benefits. Studies say that when pigeon pea at Green stage, just before it dries & changes its colour, has more Nutrition & easy for digestion too. Today we will see the Preparation of Fresh Pigeon Pea Gravy, it Goes well with Rice, Chapathi,Roti & dosa's.
Fresh Pigeon Pea Gravy

Ingredients
Fresh Pigeon Pea (Pachai Thuvarai) - 1 Cup.
Onion - 2.(Medium Size)
Tomato - 2.
Garlic - 4 (cloves).
Green Chillies - 2.
Chilli Powder - 1 tsp.
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp.
Coriander Powder - 1 tsp.
Salt - to taste.
Coconut - 1/4 Cup.
To Temper
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp.
Curry leaves - 1 sprig.
Hing - Generous Pinch.
Preparation
- Shell the Green Pea & clean it.
- Chop Onion, Tomato, Garlic & Green Chillies.
- Grind Coconut into a Smooth Paste, with little water.
Method
1. Heat the oil, add Mustard seeds. When it splutters add Cumin seeds. When it sizzles, add Curry leaves, Green chillies, Hing.
2. When Green Chillies turns Whitish, add Garlic. Saute Garlic till it turns Golden.
3. Add Chopped Onion. Saute onion, till it turns Pink.
4. Add Chopped Tomatoes. Add all spice Powders. Chilli Powder,Coriander Powder & Turmeric Powder.
5. Saute now & then, till tomatoes turns Mushy.
6. Then add Fresh Pigeon Pea.
7. Saute for 2 - 3 Minutes.8. Then add Needed water & salt. Let it boil for 12 - 15 Minutes, till Fresh Pigeon Pea is soft.
9. Add Coconut Paste, Cook for few minutes, till it gets Gravy Consistency.
10. Garnish with Fresh Cilantro.
Notes
- You can add 1/2 tsp of Garam Masala for Extra Flavour.
- you can add 1/4 tsp of Fennel seeds with Coconut & Grind it to a smooth paste & add it to Gravy at last.
